Actor Matt Damon recently shared the story of his urgent travel plans to witness the Boston Red Sox clinch their historic 2004 World Series title. Damon recounted on Amy Poehler’s podcast, “Good Hang,” how he was filming the movie “Syriana” in Dubai and watched the American League Championship Series (ALCS) against the New York Yankees from Geneva, Switzerland.
After the Red Sox secured their ALCS victory, Damon was scheduled to continue filming overseas. However, upon learning of the team's advancement, he contacted producer George Clooney, who adjusted the entire production schedule to allow Damon to return home.
"I already redid the entire schedule. You can go home," Damon recalled Clooney telling him.
Damon managed to land at New York's John F. Kennedy International Airport just as Game 1 of the World Series was underway. He made it to his apartment by the second or third inning of the game, which the Red Sox won. Believing he had found a lucky viewing spot, Damon stated he refused to change his routine, watching every subsequent game from his couch alone to avoid jinxing the team.
The 2004 championship marked the Red Sox's first World Series title since 1918. The team went on to sweep the St. Louis Cardinals 4-0 in the series.
Damon also commented on the broader significance of the win for Red Sox fans, suggesting it created a psychic shift for many. Poehler agreed, relating the championship's impact to her own family experiences.
