Canada's journey in the FIFA World Cup concluded in the Round of 16 with a 3-0 defeat to Morocco on Saturday at NRG Stadium. Despite the loss, head coach Jesse Marsch conveyed a strong sense of pride in his team's performance throughout the tournament.
"What a privilege our fans have had to root a team on like this, that goes after the game, that doesn’t play defensive, that shows that they can be better," Marsch stated in his post-match interview. He added, "I’d rather be us than them, as good as Morocco is, I’d rather be us. I’m really proud of our guys, we went after the game. They’re hurting right now, but my goodness, I couldn’t be prouder."
Canada achieved its most successful World Cup performance, securing its first-ever tournament win on June 18 against Qatar with a 6-0 victory. The team advanced to the knockout stage and defeated Switzerland 2-1 in the Round of 32, marking a significant accomplishment.
In Saturday's match, both teams remained scoreless through the first half. Morocco took the lead in the opening minutes of the second half with a goal from Azzedine Ounahi, who extended their advantage in the 82nd minute. Soufiane Rahimi scored a third goal in stoppage time, sealing Morocco's victory.
Marsch, a former coach for the New York Red Bulls, remained steadfast in his support for the Canadian team that made history during this World Cup. "In terms of how we played, the match plan that we played, sticking to who we wanted to be — what an incredible performance," he said.
