Enzo Maresca has returned to Manchester City as manager, succeeding Pep Guardiola, and used his first press conference to express his satisfaction with the move while subtly addressing his recent departure from Chelsea. Maresca left Chelsea in January to pursue the opportunity at the Etihad Stadium.
Maresca, who previously worked at City in the academy and as Guardiola's assistant during the club's Treble-winning season, stated he feels "back home and very good." He highlighted his familiarity with the club's organization and personnel, noting the stability of the club's management structure over nearly two decades. "The structure of the club and when a club has three managers in almost 20 years, it shows how serious this structure is and they understand to give time for everything," Maresca said.
His return to Manchester City came after Chelsea criticized his "integrity" following his decision to leave for the Etihad. Maresca responded to these criticisms by emphasizing his privilege to work with Guardiola, whom he considers the best coach of the past 20-25 years. "It’s a challenge, it’s nice and it’s a privilege," he stated about succeeding Guardiola. "It’s a challenge to do the right things, for the club, the fans, for everyone."
Maresca's appointment as City manager marks his first senior managerial role. He aims to uphold the club's standards and build on its recent successes.
