Manchester United has confirmed that midfielder Manuel Ugarte suffered a knee ligament injury while representing Uruguay in a World Cup match against Spain. Ugarte was stretchered off during the match, which Uruguay lost 1-0, leading to their elimination from the tournament.
The extent of the injury is still being assessed to determine the necessary treatment and the expected recovery timeline. The club stated, "Assessment of the injury is ongoing to determine the best course of treatment and the rehabilitation timescale. Everyone wishes Manuel a successful recovery and we will be supporting him every step of the way."
Ugarte's injury could significantly alter Manchester United's midfield rebuild plans for the summer. The club had reportedly been willing to listen to offers for Ugarte, who joined from Paris Saint-Germain two years ago for a fee potentially reaching £50.5 million but has struggled to secure a regular starting position. Last season, he made only 10 starts across all competitions.
The Red Devils are actively pursuing midfield reinforcements following the departure of Casemiro. They have agreed to a £39 million deal for Ederson from Atalanta and are in discussions with West Ham United for their midfielder Mateus Fernandes, who is valued between £80 million and £85 million. If Manchester United fails to sign Fernandes, other players on their shortlist include Alex Scott, Aurelien Tchouameni, Sandro Tonali, Carlos Baleba, and Adam Wharton.
While the club will receive compensation from FIFA's club protection program, which can cover up to £120,000 per week of a player's salary for injuries sustained on international duty, Ugarte's potential lengthy rehabilitation casts doubt on any summer transfer. This situation might force the club to reconsider plans to acquire a third midfielder if the budget allows, particularly if they also need to sign a left-sided player and a backup goalkeeper.
