Manchester United has identified a location for its proposed new 100,000-seat stadium, situated approximately 350 meters northwest of the existing Old Trafford ground. This development is part of a multi-billion pound draft masterplan for the regeneration of the wider Old Trafford area, to be known as Trafford Wharfside.
The club acquired a 25-acre site for the potential stadium last month, which is currently partially occupied by a go-kart track. Visuals unveiled on Thursday showcase aspects of the wider regeneration project, which aims to create a new neighborhood with 15,000 new homes and an estimated 48,000 local jobs.
While images of the proposed stadium itself were part of the unveiling, they did not include the 'circus tent' concept previously shown by minority owner Sir Jim Ratcliffe in March 2025. Club officials have stated that this design idea has not been abandoned. The current plans are described as an outline of what might be built and are not definitive, with the final stadium design to be determined in subsequent discussions.
Collette Roche, United's new stadium development chief executive, indicated that discussions regarding the stadium's design will take place in the coming weeks, with hopes of sharing more information by the end of the current calendar year or early next. Roche declined to provide a timeline for when the stadium might be ready to open, emphasizing the desire to "get it right."
The future of the current Old Trafford stadium has not yet been decided. The comprehensive Trafford Wharfside development aims to transform a 150-hectare area.
