Manchester United teenager JJ Gabriel, 15, has been called up to the senior squad, potentially making his debut in an upcoming friendly match against Rosenborg. Gabriel, considered one of the most promising young players in England's academy system, has been carefully managed by the club.

Gabriel first gained wider attention in April 2025 when he made a 25-minute debut for the Under-18s at just 14 and a half years old, scoring twice in a 13-1 victory over Leeds. Last season, he scored 29 goals in 32 appearances for the U18 team, helping them reach the FA Youth Cup and Premier League Under-18 cup finals, ultimately finishing second in the league's top scorer charts behind Manchester City's Teddie Lamb.

Director of football Jason Wilcox was instrumental in convincing Gabriel to stay with United last summer, part of a broader strategy to retain and attract young talent. The club's commitment to its youth program is also highlighted by the arrival of Thompson from Tottenham.

Gabriel has been a regular in first-team training sessions under manager Ruben Amorim and has received attention from first-team staff, including coach Michael Carrick. He was invited to the directors' box on multiple occasions last season and met with Sir Alex Ferguson in December, indicating the high regard in which he is held.

His development has been notable, as he played and scored in last season's FA Youth Cup at a younger age than Manchester United legends such as Duncan Edwards, Eddie Colman, and Ryan Giggs. Despite his slight frame, Gabriel has made a significant impact. The coaching staff adapted his playing position last season, moving him from a left-wing role to a more central position to protect him from physically stronger opposition full-backs.

If Gabriel features in the upcoming match, he would be one of the youngest players to ever play a senior game for the club. The current record holder for the youngest player in a competitive match for United is goalkeeper David Gaskell, who debuted at 16 years and 19 days old. Gabriel will turn 16 on October 6.

The club is strategically developing Gabriel, who is entering his GCSE year. His call-up to the senior squad aligns with the club's youth development strategy. His performance against senior opponents will provide valuable insights for the coaching staff as they plan his future progression, particularly as World Cup players begin to return to the squad.
