Manchester United is nearing an agreement with Turkish club Trabzonspor to extend goalkeeper Andre Onana's loan spell for another season. Onana joined Trabzonspor last summer after it became apparent he did not have a future at Old Trafford, with Manchester United having signed Senne Lammens.

The 30-year-old Cameroonian international performed well during his season in Turkey, contributing to Trabzonspor's victory in the Turkish Cup final in May. While a permanent transfer would have allowed Manchester United to recoup some of the £47.2 million paid to Inter Milan in 2023, extending the loan resolves a complex situation.

Onana has two years remaining on his contract and is due to return for pre-season training. Manchester United has decided against reintegrating him into the squad for the upcoming season to compete with Lammens, who has established himself as the club's primary goalkeeper. Lammens' £21.7 million move from Royal Antwerp was recognized as the Premier League's transfer of the season.

Manchester United may seek a new backup goalkeeper if Altay Bayindir departs. The club has been linked with Karl Darlow of Leeds and Sam Johnstone of Wolves. Veteran goalkeeper Tom Heaton has already signed a one-year contract extension. The club is reportedly mindful that Onana's weekly salary of £120,000 and his personality could make it challenging to place him on the bench.
