Manchester United secured a convincing 4-0 victory over Sabah FK in their Champions League return, with Youri Tielemans delivering a standout performance. The match, held at Old Trafford, marked United's first appearance in Europe's premier competition in nearly three years.
Despite the significant difference in pedigree between the two clubs, with Sabah hailing from Azerbaijan and having navigated four qualifying rounds as underdogs, Manchester United established dominance early on. The club, which reportedly did not exist until a decade ago, was facing a team whose manager, Valdas Dambrauskas, had a unique path to the dugout, having won a substantial sum on a television quiz show and used it to fund his coaching education, including a spell with United's Soccer Schools.
Matheus Cunha opened the scoring in the 27th minute, capitalizing on an over-committed Sabah defense. Bruno Fernandes doubled the lead in the 42nd minute, assisted by Tielemans, who continued his impressive display by starting the move and making a decisive run into the box. Benjamin Sesko added a third goal just before halftime, rounding off a swift counter-attack initiated by Fernandes. Lisandro Martinez completed the scoring in the 68th minute, pouncing on a rebound after a save from Sabah goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov.
Manager Michael Carrick used the comfortable margin to rest key players and make tactical adjustments ahead of Sunday's derby against Manchester City. Luke Shaw was rested as a precaution for cramp, with Patrick Dorgu deputizing at left-back. Marcus Rashford was also on the bench, and Matheus Cunha shifted to the left wing while Benjamin Sesko made his first start of the season. Both Cunha and Sesko found the net.
Tielemans, a summer signing from Aston Villa for £35 million, was a significant influence throughout the first half, orchestrating play with several defense-splitting passes. He was substituted at halftime, likely to protect him ahead of upcoming fixtures.
The victory sets Manchester United on a positive path in the Champions League group stage, though their next fixture against Atletico Madrid in the Metropolitano stadium is expected to present a far greater challenge. The team maintained a perfect record among Premier League clubs in the opening round of fixtures.
