Manchester City has established a valuation of over £60 million (approximately €70 million) for midfielder Rodri, as Barcelona intensifies efforts to secure the Spanish captain's signature. Barcelona has already agreed personal terms with the 30-year-old World Cup winner, who is reportedly seeking a new challenge ahead of the upcoming season.
Sources indicate that Barcelona initiated discussions with City and have had an initial offer of nearly £40 million rejected by the English club. Manchester City has a precedent of allowing players to depart if their valuation is met, and they appear to be adhering to this principle in negotiations for Rodri.
Rodri had been in discussions with Real Madrid but informed them this week that Barcelona is his preferred destination. He is scheduled to join manager Enzo Maresca's squad next week, and the club has kept a contract extension offer on the table for the player, whose current deal expires next summer.
Despite being in pursuit of Lille teenager Ayyoub Bouaddi for a potential transfer exceeding £80 million, Manchester City has signaled readiness to acquire an experienced replacement should Rodri depart.
The midfielder, who won the Ballon d'Or in 2024, had remained reserved about his future while on international duty. It is understood he was open to returning to Spain following the conclusion of Pep Guardiola's tenure at City.
Last season, Guardiola suggested that Rodri's performance might not reach its peak until after the World Cup, attributing this to various injury issues, including an ACL injury sustained two years prior. Rodri underwent back surgery shortly after winning the World Cup, as previously reported.
