West Ham United has announced the death of their legendary former goalkeeper and coach, Ludek Miklosko, at the age of 64. The Czech star died after a battle with cancer. Miklosko, affectionately known by supporters as 'Ludo,' played 373 matches for the Hammers between 1990 and 1997. He made his last known visit to the London Stadium in December 2024 as a Guest of Honour for a match against Liverpool, having at that time confirmed his diagnosis.

During his time with West Ham, Miklosko was instrumental in the club winning two promotions. He also reached the semi-finals of both the FA Cup and the League Cup. In 1995, he delivered a man-of-the-match performance that prevented Sir Alex Ferguson's Manchester United from winning the Premier League title.

Beyond his goalkeeping prowess, Miklosko was also recognized as a coach and played for Queens Park Rangers in English football. He represented his country twice and played for Hvezda Cheb and Banik Ostrava in his homeland. Most recently, he led the sports department at Banik Ostrava.

The club stated, "The giant goalkeeper will forever hold a special place in the hearts of the West Ham family. Everyone at West Ham United would like to extend their sincere condolences to Ludek’s family and loved ones at this very sad time."

Fans have continued to sing his signature chant, "my name is Ludek Miklosko, I come from near Moscow, I play in goal for West Ham," at matches since his diagnosis.

The much-loved Czech 'gentle giant' made 373 outings for West Ham and also played for QPR

Tributes have poured in from former teammates and football officials. Former West Ham teammate Julian Dicks shared on X, "Very sad news today, the passing of Ludo, I will see you again one day my friend. Plus don’t forget to have a Czech Bud waiting for me."

David Trunda, head of the Czech football association, expressed deep sorrow, stating, "Ludek Miklosko has significantly inscribed himself into its history with his performances as well as his approach to football, earning respect not only in the Czech Republic but also abroad." He added, "His name will forever be associated with a significant era of Czech football and with the values that he represented as both a player and a person."

Talksport broadcaster Ian Abrahams described Miklosko as "A gentle giant, a phenomenal goalkeeper" and a "great gentleman."

Fans have also shared their memories, with one describing him as a "goalkeeping phenomenon."
