London City Lionesses began the Women's Super League season with a hard-fought 2-1 victory over Manchester United.
The home side took the lead in the ninth minute when Alanna Kennedy headed home a corner. Danielle van de Donk extended the advantage late in the match before Simi Awujo scored a consolation goal for United with the final kick.
New Signings and Big Ambitions
London City Lionesses have signaled their intent with a significant recruitment drive over the summer, backed by owner Michele Kang. Among the high-profile arrivals is two-time Ballon d'Or winner Alexia Putellas. Her presence has already translated into increased attention, with the match marking the club's largest-ever home attendance.
Putellas, who joined from Barcelona, acknowledged the club's ambition and the challenge of a new league as key factors in her move. Despite her pedigree, Putellas's debut saw her record only one shot and drop deeper into midfield to find possession.
"Having this kind of player in the squad is important because she represents the high standards," said London City manager Eder Maestre. "But it is not only about Alexia, she is only a player. I think the most impactful thing is the way that we play as a team, being connected and the chemistry that we are building."
Manchester United's Youthful Approach
In contrast to their opponents, Manchester United have embraced a youth-focused strategy for the upcoming season. The team under new manager Eva Olid features younger signings such as defender Andrea Medina and winger Monica Jusu Bah, alongside experienced player Rebeca Bernal. The club also saw several established players depart, including star striker Melvine Malard, who was sold to Chelsea.
"It's a process," Olid stated after the match. "In three weeks I tried to tell that we can be a team who can dominate with the ball and attack. I feel it is something more mental. In the first half I felt like the players weren’t believing to have the ball. At half time I said 'this isn’t us, we need the ball for ourself' and we can see the change in the second half."
Mary Earps on the Bench
Goalkeeper Mary Earps returned to the WSL with London City Lionesses but was an unused substitute against her former club, Manchester United. Earps, a prominent figure during her time at United, joined PSG two seasons prior before returning to the English top flight.
Manager Maestre explained Earps's absence from the starting lineup was due to "issues" during pre-season that limited her game time, with Elene Lete earning the start.
Despite assembling a squad of top international talent, London City Lionesses faced a vocal away support from Manchester United fans throughout the match. The home crowd was largely subdued, with notable cheers only for the club's goal and the announcement of Putellas's name. United, despite trailing for most of the game, generated more audible support.
