Newcomers George Lombard Jr. and Luis García Jr. delivered crucial defensive plays in the 10th inning to secure a 3-2 comeback victory for the New York Yankees against the Atlanta Braves on Friday.
The Yankees reached extra innings thanks to a ninth-inning rally initiated by Lombard. He reached base on an infield single and advanced to third when Raisel Iglesias' throw to first base went awry. Lombard then scored one of the two runs that tied the game.
In the top of the 10th inning, with the game tied and a runner on third, Lombard made a significant defensive play. He backhanded a hard ground ball hit by Atlanta's Sean Murphy, displaying strong athleticism and an accurate arm to secure the out at first base. Later in the inning, with two outs and a runner on third, Ronald Acuña hit a bloop down the first-base line. Yankees first baseman Luis García Jr. sprinted and extended his glove to make a diving catch, sealing the win for New York.
Lombard, who was acquired by the Yankees for his defense, validated the team's decision with his play at shortstop. García, a recent trade acquisition known for his ability to hit right-handed pitching, provided a surprising but welcome defensive contribution.
