LIV Golf has announced a significant $250 million cash injection from a mystery investor, a move that appears to secure the future of the upstart golf tour after its primary financial backer, Saudi Arabia's Public Investment Fund (PIF), indicated it would cease funding after the 2026 season. The tour's CEO, Scott O'Neil, confirmed the agreement with a lead investor, stating that terms are expected to be finalized in September.
This new investment is set to usher in what O'Neil referred to as "LIV Golf 2.0." A key element of this next chapter will be making the tour's players majority equity holders, a structure described as a first for a major global sports league. "We’re also seeing strong interest from more than a dozen additional parties to potentially serve as minority investors, creating a multi-partner model built for long-term stability and growth," O'Neil said.
The rebel golf circuit, launched in 2022, had offered substantial bonuses to lure prominent players, including Brooks Koepka, Dustin Johnson, Bryson DeChambeau, and Jon Rahm, away from the PGA Tour. However, the withdrawal of PIF funding had cast a shadow over its operations, leading to the cancellation of at least one event, in New Orleans.
Under the proposed "LIV Golf 2.0" structure, the tour plans to stage 10 team events annually, with five taking place in the United States and five internationally. Additionally, the tour aims to schedule events leading into major championships and create a calendar that permits players to compete on other circuits. This comes as the PGA Tour maintains a one-year ban on players participating in LIV events.
Players have expressed cautious optimism regarding the developments. Bryson DeChambeau led a player meeting to discuss the tour's status. "We’re in this together. We’re fully backing Scott," said player Richard Bland. "I think probably in the next two to three weeks we’ll have a bigger picture."
LIV Golf is scheduled to hold an event in Indianapolis from August 20-23. The season-ending team championship in Michigan has faced uncertainty regarding venue preparations, with the tournament slated to begin in three weeks. O'Neil met with team captains on Tuesday to discuss these ongoing matters.
