LIV Golf is reportedly set to cancel its season-ending Team Championship, scheduled to take place from August 30 in Michigan. Players involved in the league have been informed of the potential cancellation, according to reports.

This development comes as LIV Golf is finalizing a signed agreement with a new investor, with the transaction expected to be completed in September. The league's chief executive, Scott O'Neil, stated that the board has approved the deal. While the specifics of the investment amount have not been disclosed, the Public Investment Fund (PIF) has already invested over $5 billion in LIV Golf since its inception in 2022.

O'Neil also indicated that LIV Golf plans to make its players "majority equity holders" in the competition, a move described as "a first for a major global sports league." The proposed deal with the lead investor is reportedly for "2027 and beyond."

In preparation for the upcoming season, LIV Golf will reduce its schedule to 10 events, with five taking place in the United States and five internationally. This follows a period of uncertainty, during which the league postponed the New Orleans competition originally slated for June and has yet to announce a rescheduled date.

Last week, O'Neil expressed a focus on "finishing the 2026 season strong," but made no direct mention of the final two events of the current season, including the Indianapolis competition starting August 23.

LIV Golf, founded in 2021, initially featured 54-hole events but transitioned to the traditional 72-hole format this season. The league has attracted several major winners, including Jon Rahm, Bryson DeChambeau, Dustin Johnson, Cameron Smith, Martin Kaymer, and Sergio Garcia. Some prominent golfers, such as Brooks Koepka and Patrick Reed, have since rejoined the PGA Tour.

O'Neil emphasized the global nature of LIV Golf's player roster, with 57 players from 21 countries competing across 10 countries on five continents. He highlighted the star power of players like Rahm and DeChambeau, calling them "some of the biggest stars in sports."
