Luke Littler's quest to qualify for the Players Championship finals has been complicated by a semi-final defeat to Brendan Dolan in the latest event, PC28, held in Leicester. This marks another setback in his efforts to secure a spot in the prestigious tournament.
Littler reached the semi-final stage at PC28, one round further than he managed in the preceding event, PC27, where he was eliminated in the quarter-finals by Jermaine Wattimena. However, the semi-final exit means he narrowly missed out on a chance to compete for the title, which was ultimately claimed by Luke Humphries, who defeated Dolan 8-6 in the final.
Following his performance at PC28, Littler's standing in the order of merit saw him climb from 141st to 125th, earning £10,500 in prize money. Despite this progress, the world number one acknowledged the challenge ahead, stating on Instagram, "We are so on the move." This climb, however, does not guarantee a place in the finals, as only the top 64 players in the Players Championship standings qualify for the event in Minehead.
Littler currently trails 64th-placed Shane McGuirk by £16,750. This deficit is particularly significant as he opted to skip the initial 26 events on the professional circuit, a decision made to manage his demanding schedule. The world number one has largely avoided the floor events earlier in the year.
With only seven ranking events remaining in the calendar, Littler faces a critical juncture. The projected cutoff for qualification is expected to exceed £30,000. To improve his chances, Littler may need to reconsider his schedule and potentially compete in the upcoming events in Den Bosch next month. His previous stated intention was to focus solely on UK-based events, with the final two qualification events scheduled for Leicester on November 4 and 5.
Luke Humphries, who secured the PC28 title, commented on Littler's recent performances. "Luke has been by far the best player in the last 18 months and he deserves the world number one spot," Humphries said. "He's won everything and I am going to be the only one who's trying to stop him. I want to go on and win a major this year. I don't want him to have a clean sweep - as much as everyone would love to see it."
