The Detroit Lions are expected to sign linebacker Owen Pappoe to their practice squad, a move that comes in the wake of a serious neck injury sustained by starting linebacker Jack Campbell. The addition is pending a physical.
Pappoe, 26, was a fifth-round draft pick by the Arizona Cardinals in the 2023 NFL Draft. Last season, he played in all 17 games for the Cardinals, recording 27 tackles and two pass defenses. Prior to the Lions' visit on Tuesday, Pappoe was released by the Titans after being claimed off waivers a month earlier. He was initially let go by the Cardinals as part of their final roster cuts after preseason, despite being a former captain at Auburn and entering the final year of his rookie contract.
The Lions' linebacker position has been impacted by multiple injuries. Campbell is sidelined indefinitely after being carted off the field with a neck injury during Sunday's game against the Minnesota Vikings. Additionally, linebacker Jimmy Rolder was placed on injured reserve Tuesday with a season-ending hamstring injury.
Head coach Dan Campbell expressed confidence in the team's existing depth at the position, citing players like Malcolm Rodriguez, Derrick Barnes, Amen Ogbongbemiga, and Brock Martin (Bachie). However, he acknowledged the need to assess and potentially add reinforcements. "We may need a little bit of help. We’re looking at everything. We’ll adjust as we go," Campbell stated.
As of Tuesday, Jack Campbell's condition was reported to be improving following his injury on Sunday. Pappoe's signing is also expected to provide depth on special teams.
