The Detroit Lions have made running back Jahmyr Gibbs the highest-paid player at his position in NFL history, agreeing to terms on a new three-year contract worth $75.75 million. The deal includes $51.5 million in guaranteed money, setting new benchmarks for both annual value and total guarantees for a running back.

This landmark agreement comes just days after the Atlanta Falcons briefly held the title of highest-paid running back with Bijan Robinson's contract, which is valued at up to $75 million with $51 million guaranteed and a $37 million signing bonus.

Gibbs, entering his fourth season, returned to the field on Thursday for the Lions' training camp, participating in early drills and stretching before working with trainers on the sideline. This appearance marked his first on-field activity since the start of camp, though he has been involved in team meetings. His participation was seen as a positive sign as contract negotiations neared completion.

In the 2025 season, Gibbs recorded 1,223 rushing yards and 13 touchdowns, adding 77 receptions for 616 yards and five receiving scores. Lions offensive coordinator Drew Petzing expressed confidence in Gibbs' readiness, stating before practice, "He's one of our best players. We always want him out there, but I know he's going to be ready when the moment comes. I'm not concerned about it."

Earlier on Thursday, Indianapolis Colts running back Jonathan Taylor also secured a significant contract extension. Taylor signed a two-year deal worth $44 million, ensuring the 2021 NFL rushing leader remains with the Colts and avoiding free agency next spring. Taylor had previously reiterated his desire to finish his career in Indianapolis and expressed confidence that a deal would be finalized before the team's September 13 season opener against the Baltimore Ravens.
