The New York Liberty may find their next head coach in Indiana, as the Fever undergo a significant leadership transition. Stephanie White, the current head coach of the Fever, expressed her desire to return next season, but acknowledged the decision rests with the organization. Her future has become uncertain following the recent departures of team president Kelly Krauskopf and general manager Amber Cox.

White is under contract with the Fever for the upcoming season, but a new general manager could opt to bring in their own coaching staff. If the Fever decide to move in a different direction, the Liberty, who are searching for their third head coach in three years, could see White as a prime candidate. She brings extensive experience, a winning record, and tactical acumen that could potentially elevate the Liberty back into championship contention.

The Liberty replaced their previous coach, Chris DeMarco, who lacked experience in women's basketball, after just one year. In contrast, White possesses over two decades of coaching experience in both college and the WNBA. She previously coached the Connecticut Sun for seven seasons, leading them to back-to-back semifinals, before returning to the Fever in 2025.

During her tenure with the Fever, White has compiled a 52-36 record while navigating the intense spotlight surrounding Caitlin Clark. In 2025, the team nearly upset the Las Vegas Aces in the semifinals without Clark. This past season, the Fever, led by Kelsey Mitchell and Clark, set a league record for scoring, averaging 96 points per game, despite suffering a first-round playoff exit.

While questions have been raised about White's offensive creativity, she is known for her strong defensive philosophies. The Liberty, who struggled with defensive identity last season, could benefit from her approach. The challenge for any new Liberty coach will be to maximize the offensive talents of stars like Breanna Stewart, Sabrina Ionescu, and Jonquel Jones, while establishing clear roles for other players. White's defensive focus could provide the necessary structure for the team's star-laden roster.
