Charles Leclerc led the way for Ferrari in the first practice session at the Italian Grand Prix, with teammate Lewis Hamilton also posting a competitive time. The session at the iconic Monza circuit saw several drivers test the limits, with traffic also identified as an issue.
Leclerc finished ahead of Hamilton, who has secured victories in the past two races in Hungary and Zandvoort. Other notable performances in the session included Lando Norris taking sixth place for McLaren, while Arvid Lindblad was seventh for Racing Bulls. Audi's Gabriel Bortoleto, Alpine's Franco Colapinto, and rookie Paul Aron rounded out the top 10. Aron was substituting for Colapinto's teammate Pierre Gasly during the first hour of practice.
Oscar Piastri, Norris's McLaren teammate, finished the session in 11th place. Yuki Tsunoda of Racing Bulls was 12th, followed by Audi's Nico Hulkenberg in 13th and Oliver Bearman in 14th for Haas.
During the session, it was announced that McLaren and Red Bull had won their appeals regarding pit-lane speeding penalties from the Monaco Grand Prix. This decision overturned penalties that had affected the race results, including a podium finish for Pierre Gasly of Alpine. The appeals process led to the reassessment of multiple five-second penalties issued during the Monaco event.
