LeBron James has informed the Los Angeles Lakers that he intends to continue his NBA career in the 2026-27 season but will do so with a different team, ending his tenure with the franchise and igniting speculation about his next destination.
The decision places the Golden State Warriors at the center of NBA offseason discussions, with reports indicating the team is actively pursuing James. ESPN’s Brian Windhorst stated that Golden State is focused on acquiring James from Los Angeles and is attempting to finalize a deal soon.
James, who will be entering his age-41 season, remained a productive player for the Lakers during the 2025-26 season. He averaged 20.9 points, 7.2 assists, and 6.1 rebounds across 60 games, contributing to the Lakers securing the No. 4 seed in the Western Conference. Despite injuries affecting the team in the playoffs, James helped lead the Lakers past the Houston Rockets in the first round before their second-round sweep by the Oklahoma City Thunder.
The Lakers appear to be shifting their focus towards Luka Dončić, prompting James to seek a new environment to conclude his career.
Reports suggest the Warriors have explored pathways to sign James. Tim Kawakami of The San Francisco Standard reported that Draymond Green’s decision to decline his player option could open financial flexibility for Golden State, potentially allowing them to offer James the non-taxpayer midlevel exception, estimated to be around $15 million. This would require James to accept a significant pay reduction but would reunite him with Stephen Curry and Green under coach Steve Kerr, offering a chance to compete for another championship.
The status of Jimmy Butler is also a factor. While Butler had been linked to trade rumors, Golden State has reportedly indicated they do not intend to trade him. This may simplify the pursuit of James, as recent reporting suggests the Warriors might not need to acquire Anthony Davis to clear a path for James.
With the Lakers unable to offer continuity and James signaling a desire for a change, the Warriors present a financially viable option and a compelling pitch for the veteran superstar at this stage of his career. James is set to continue playing, but not in Los Angeles.
