Lando Norris has committed his future to McLaren, signing a contract extension that will keep him with the Formula One team until at least 2030. The deal is reportedly worth up to £30 million per year.
Norris announced the news to his team on Saturday at their Woking factory. He has been with McLaren since joining their junior program in 2017, progressing to become a lead driver for the team. Since his debut, Norris has competed in 163 Grands Prix, securing 13 wins, 18 pole positions, and 48 podium finishes, marking him as McLaren's most experienced driver in terms of race starts.
He is expected to continue racing alongside Oscar Piastri, the Australian driver who also signed a long-term contract with McLaren last year. Norris expressed that the announcement could serve as a motivational boost for the team, stating, "It’s best for what will motivate them and make them more comfortable and give them a push. So, it’s perfect timing from that perspective. I want them to know that there’s no other place I’d rather be than right here."
Norris's new contract places him among the sport's highest earners, alongside drivers like Charles Leclerc at Ferrari and George Russell at Mercedes. Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen are reported to be Formula One's top earners, with annual earnings potentially exceeding £80 million including bonuses.
Reflecting on his decision, Norris indicated a desire for long-term commitment, saying, "I’m open to staying at McLaren for the rest of my career. I’d be very, very proud at the end of my career to say that has been the case. I’ve not been someone who’s jumped from team to team, or jumped to a potential opportunity to the next potential opportunity. I’ve stuck with McLaren through times when there was a chance in the past to go elsewhere. And I am very happy to just stay where I am."
