San Francisco 49ers head coach Kyle Shanahan has been seen for the first time with a cast on his left hand, two weeks after a two-vehicle accident on July 14 resulted in multiple injuries. Photos obtained by the California Post show Shanahan returning to his Palo Alto home on Tuesday after practice in Santa Clara.
Shanahan was reportedly driving about 20 mph near his home when he dropped his phone, which became stuck in his seat. While looking for the device, his car veered into another vehicle. The collision resulted in a broken nose, fractured ribs, a facial wound requiring 40 stitches, and a concussion.
Shanahan has stated he was fortunate to survive the crash and that the other driver was not injured. He also noted that he was lucky not to have lost an eye, according to a friend, former NFL quarterback Chris Simms. The concussion has led to lingering effects, limiting Shanahan's participation at the start of the 49ers' training camp. Assistant coach Chris Foerster is serving as interim head coach.
The 49ers are scheduled to begin their season against the Rams on September 10 in Australia. Shanahan was wearing an olive shirt, light blue pants, and Crocs in the recent photos, with the cast being the only visible bandaging.
