Azeez Al-Shaair, a nominee for the Walter Payton NFL Man of the Year award, has credited San Francisco 49ers fullback Kyle Juszczyk with playing a pivotal role in his development as an NFL player. Al-Shaair, now a standout linebacker for the Houston Texans, spoke about Juszczyk's influence on the "Green Light Podcast" hosted by Chris Long.

Al-Shaair recalled being an undrafted rookie free agent with the 49ers, sitting next to Juszczyk in team meetings. Despite their differing statuses on the team, Juszczyk consistently offered support and guidance. "He didn’t have to talk to me or say anything to me, but he poured into me every single chance he got, every day, checking on me, talking to me, trying to help me," Al-Shaair stated.

Al-Shaair, who recently signed a three-year, $54 million contract extension with the Texans after a season with over 100 tackles and a forced fumble, was recognized as one of the NFL's top 100 players. During a video celebrating this achievement, Juszczyk appeared and spoke highly of Al-Shaair's playing style. "I have so much respect for Azeez and how he plays the game," Juszczyk said. "He plays it so fast, so physically, so aggressively. I feel like that’s the reason why they’ve been so successful this year is because of his leadership and the way he plays football."

The recognition from Juszczyk held significant weight for Al-Shaair, who described the moment as surreal due to the belief his former mentor had shown in him. Al-Shaair and Juszczyk were teammates for four seasons with the 49ers before Al-Shaair's departure for the Tennessee Titans in 2023, where he recorded 163 tackles.

Juszczyk, a ten-time Pro Bowl selection and three-time first-team All-Pro, has established himself as a respected leader within the 49ers' locker room, serving as a team captain twice. He was re-signed by the 49ers in March on a two-year, $8 million deal after initially being released in the offseason.
