Kevin Durant, star player for the Houston Rockets, has called out what he perceives as an "unfair" double standard regarding LeBron James' recent move to the Philadelphia 76ers. Durant drew a direct comparison between James joining the 76ers and his own decision to sign with the Golden State Warriors in 2016, a move that drew significant criticism.
"For sure! I mean, you don’t think so?" Durant stated when asked if the 76ers are contenders, referencing a post from ESPN's Ben Golliver. "[The] last time they put three 20-point scorers on a team, they said it was unfair, which was the [Warriors] team I was on. They’ve got four 25-point scorers on this team. So, hell yeah, I think they’re going to be a contender. They’re going to be a great team to watch."
Durant's comments highlight the public and media reaction to star players joining already-strong teams. In 2016, Durant's decision to join the Warriors, who had reached the NBA Finals the previous season and defeated his Oklahoma City Thunder, was met with widespread backlash. The Warriors team, featuring Stephen Curry, Klay Thompson, and Draymond Green, was considered one of the most dominant lineups in NBA history, ultimately winning two championships with Durant.
In contrast, James' move to the 76ers, a team that also boasts significant talent including Jaylen Brown, has not garnered the same level of negative attention. Durant suggested that this difference in reaction could be attributed to the fact that the 76ers did not eliminate the Los Angeles Lakers, James' former team, in the postseason this year, unlike how his Warriors team had eliminated Durant's Thunder.
The 76ers, with the addition of James and the acquisition of Brown, are now seen as a formidable force in the league. Durant's perspective suggests a belief that the team's assembled talent should place them among the top contenders, questioning why the current configuration is not being viewed with the same alarm as his Warriors squad.
