Ken Hinkley is poised to be officially announced as the inaugural head coach of the Tasmania Devils on Monday, following a final presentation that impressed the club's board. Hinkley, a former star player for Geelong, was chosen over other notable candidates including Nathan Buckley and John Longmire.
The Devils, the 19th team to join the Australian Football League (AFL), are scheduled to begin play in 2028. Hinkley's appointment marks a significant step in building the team's leadership structure.
Reports indicate that Hinkley traveled to Hobart on Sunday as part of the final selection process. He was reportedly the last candidate to present to the club's selection panel. Alastair Lynch, a director for the Devils, confirmed he was present for Hinkley's presentation, stating at the time that the selection process was ongoing but that it was progressing well.
Hinkley's extensive coaching experience, including a 13-year tenure as coach of Port Adelaide before his departure last season, was seen as a key factor. He is known for his man-management skills and is tasked with establishing a strong, hard-working culture for the new team from its inception. His existing relationships with senior coaches and executives within the AFL were also considered advantageous.
Tasmania's path to securing Hinkley was reportedly aided when he withdrew his interest in the Essendon coaching role due to James Hird's involvement. John Longmire, another candidate, was reportedly more reserved about the possibility due to his current role with the Sydney Swans.
The Devils are still in the process of appointing a football manager to complement their coaching leadership.
