British No. 1 tennis player Katie Boulter has shared insights into her recent wedding to fellow professional Alex de Minaur, recounting minor mishaps and her strategy for managing her wedding ring during matches. The couple, who married in a small ceremony in Leicestershire to accommodate Boulter's grandfather before a larger reception in Tuscany, Italy, experienced unexpected, albeit humorous, challenges on their big day.
"There were just little things (that went wrong)," Boulter admitted. "Honestly, it was like Alex lost a button on his shirt. My brother had to sew it on for him, as if he knows how to sew? It was just little things like that that you take for granted. You’re like, everything will be perfect. Of course I’m going to have all the buttons on my shirt. What could possibly go wrong? And then obviously things like that happen."
Boulter also described a moment just before walking down the aisle where the shoulder of her dress popped off, requiring quick fixes with safety pins. "So they were scrambling for safety pins just to be able to keep that on. Just things that I think make the story even funnier," she said. "I wouldn’t change it because there was a lot of (people) thinking on their feet. And it bonded everyone even more so. It’s something that we can look back on and laugh about now. So I think it was perfect."
The soaring temperatures of a European heatwave in Italy also presented a challenge. "It was hot. It was boiling," Boulter continued. "It was in Tuscany. It was maybe a little too hot, if I’m honest. But it was very special. We were outside and then went indoors for a nice dinner. And it was just great to have everyone in one place. It was something that never happens. So it’s a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity for us."
Following advice from three-time Grand Slam champion Andy Murray, Boulter confirmed that she will continue to use her maiden name, Boulter, for her tennis career. She also stated that she will not wear her wedding ring on court during matches. "Not during matches. I can’t," she said. "No. I learned from Andy (Murray). I’m not going to do that."
Murray famously devised a method to keep his wedding ring with him during play by tying it to his shoelaces. However, this led to a scare in 2021 when his shoes, with the ring attached, were stolen after he left them to dry under his car at Indian Wells. The ring and shoes were later returned following a public appeal on social media.
Boulter, who recently overtook Emma Raducanu as the highest-ranked British woman on the tour, is preparing for her first Grand Slam appearance since her wedding at the US Open in New York. Her recent singles matches in Washington, the Canadian Open, and Cincinnati have resulted in first-round losses. She is scheduled to face American player Carol Lee in her opening match on Sunday.
