Kate O'Connor has won her first senior outdoor gold medal in the heptathlon at the event in Glasgow. The Northern Ireland athlete finished with a total of 6,569 points, more than 290 points ahead of her nearest competitor, England's Jade O'Dowda.
The competition presented significant challenges, particularly a rain-soaked second session on Tuesday evening. After a strong start, including a third-place finish in the 100m hurdles and a season's best of 1.82m in the high jump, O'Connor struggled in the shot put. She recorded a throw of 12.85m, well below her usual standard, attributing the difficulty to the torrential rain that made gripping the implement akin to holding a "bar of soap."
Despite this setback, O'Connor demonstrated resilience in the subsequent 200m, winning her heat in 24.14 seconds. She described the shot put performance as making it "a lot easier for the rest of them to beat me" but emphasized her determination to perform well on Wednesday.
Strong Finish Secures Victory
O'Connor's efforts on the second day included a long jump of 6.37m and a season's best javelin throw of 52.85m, an event she had focused on improving. The final event, the 800m, saw her cruise to victory in 2:10.46 as the sun emerged.
Initially, O'Connor had aimed for a higher score, targeting 6,600 or 6,700 points to open her season. However, she acknowledged that the conditions and challenges required a shift in focus from large scores to competitive performance. "It's not always about getting huge big scores but competing and getting the best out of yourself with the elements and challenges," she stated.
While the shot put performance needs further work in adverse conditions, O'Connor expressed overall satisfaction with her performance and the positive takeaways from the competition, culminating in her first senior outdoor gold medal.
