Karim Benzema, the 38-year-old European football legend, has reportedly agreed to tear up his lucrative contract with Saudi Pro League side Al-Hilal just six months after joining. The French forward is said to be considering retirement from professional football.

Benzema joined Al-Hilal in January on a free transfer from fellow Saudi club Al-Ittihad, signing a deal that was set to run until June 2027. His previous move to Al-Ittihad in 2023 was from Real Madrid.

His arrival in Saudi Arabia had previously sparked a brief strike by Cristiano Ronaldo at Al-Nassr, reportedly due to concerns over financial backing compared to rival clubs. Benzema's tenure at Al-Hilal has been brief, with the club expected to announce his departure following recent discussions.

Saudi journalist Waleed Al-Farraj reported that Benzema is leaning towards retirement, having rejected options that included moves to Al-Shabab or a return to Al-Ittihad. "When the decision came into his hands, he indicated that he was leaning towards retiring from football," Al-Farraj stated.

Benzema was reportedly earning up to £85 million annually during his time in Saudi Arabia. His current contract with Al-Hilal is said to be worth £18.5 million annually, supplemented by a separate deal. Furthermore, he reportedly has four years remaining on a Saudi Pro League contract worth £17 million per year, which obligates him to promote football and participate in promotional events within the country.

This secondary contract could complicate any potential move abroad, as it is claimed such a move would lead to its cancellation. This financial structure may have limited Benzema's options for continuing his playing career.

Al-Hilal has recently confirmed the signing of Ollie Watkins from Aston Villa for £50 million. The club has also agreed to a £55 million deal for Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli.
