Harry Kane has told his England teammates that discussions about winning major silverware must cease, emphasizing the need to focus on execution and "finishing the job" after the team's latest World Cup disappointment.

The England squad departed Miami in a state of shock following their 6-4 victory over France, which secured third place in the tournament. Despite achieving their best finish on foreign soil, the lingering impact of a painful late semi-final defeat by Argentina remains evident.

Kane suggested that the manner of the semi-final loss would affect the team for weeks. He revealed that the squad had been analyzing how to best handle specific scenarios against top opposition since their loss in the 2024 European Championship final to Spain. "The last 30 minutes of Argentina is not the team we want to be," Kane stated. "We spent a lot of time over the last two years talking about that situation, to attack those moments. The bottom line is we lost anyway."

He added, "It’s easy to go away and talk about it. We need to get better at actually being in those situations. We have to learn, improve. The coach will have improved from these learnings. I can talk as much as I want but ultimately it’s about showing it next time we’re in that situation."

Kane believes the upcoming Nations League campaign, featuring matches against Spain, Croatia, and Czechia starting in September, will better prepare England for the home Euros. He also expressed his support for manager Thomas Tuchel, despite criticism regarding the management of a one-goal lead against Argentina in the semi-final.

"It’s the enthusiasm he has, the emotion he brings, the tactical experience he has," Kane said of Tuchel. "It doesn’t mean you’re going to get it right every time. We want to get it right on the biggest occasions and he expects that from himself as well. He’s a fantastic coach."

Kane noted that it was Tuchel's first major tournament and that both the coach and players would learn from the experiences, including the pressures and travel. The fact that players had been discussing their inability to close out big games even before Tuchel's arrival suggests an internal acknowledgment of responsibility.

Tuchel had expressed his disappointment with public criticism, comparing his reception to being eliminated from the group stage without a win. Kane acknowledged the pain of the defeat, stating, "He not only gave the players belief but he gave the country belief that it was our year. That is why it hurts even more than other years because everyone believed we were going all the way."

The England captain described the current mood as a "grieving stage, the emotional stage," which he expects to continue for several weeks. He conveyed that fans and the team remain behind the manager, and that emotions are high, which is understandable given the circumstances. He anticipates that these feelings will subside naturally.

Kane also highlighted the positive aspects of the tournament, including overcoming tough situations and the strong camaraderie within the squad, which he described as the best he has been a part of. He credited Tuchel with playing a significant role in fostering this togetherness.
