Los Angeles Chargers quarterback Justin Herbert has shared details about the nervousness he experienced before proposing to singer Madison Beer, describing the moment as more anxiety-inducing than his NFL debut.
Herbert, 28, and Beer, who have been dating for approximately one year, announced their engagement last week after Herbert proposed. Returning to training camp, Herbert was asked by reporters to compare the nerves felt during the proposal to those of his first NFL start at age 22. He admitted with a smile, "The proposal, for sure."
Teammates indicated that the engagement was not entirely unexpected. Safety Derwin James Jr. stated he had known about Herbert's intentions for some time, expressing happiness for the quarterback. Linebacker Daiyan Henley recalled conversations as early as the 2025 season about Herbert's commitment, noting, "I knew she was the one when Justin slid on the field against the Chiefs in Sao Paulo. It was her impact."
Beer recently made an appearance at the Chargers' training camp, where she and Herbert were observed engaging in public displays of affection. She was seen hugging Herbert as he left the field after a practice session.
The couple's relationship began last summer when they were first seen together on the set of a music video shoot for Beer. Beer subsequently attended Chargers games, appearing in VIP suites. Their relationship became more public in Week 5 of the 2025 season when they shared a kiss before a game against the Washington Commanders.
Herbert also participated in Beer's music video for her song "lovergirl," released in May as part of her "locket deluxe" album.
Head coach Jim Harbaugh acknowledged the news, stating his happiness for the couple. "We didn't know until after he told us," Harbaugh told reporters. "He kind of said it was going to happen this summer and, yeah, it's awesome. I feel great for him. It's awesome."
When asked for marriage advice, Harbaugh offered, "Attack each day with an enthusiasm unknown to mankind together."
