England midfielder Jude Bellingham has credited his mother, Denise Bellingham, with helping him maintain discipline on the field during the 2026 World Cup, particularly in avoiding further yellow cards. Bellingham, who scored both goals in England's 2-1 quarter-final victory over Norway, stated that his mother has been actively advising him to control his language, tackles, and emotional reactions.
"My mum's been telling me all week to watch my language, watch my tackles, watch my face, watch my emotions," Bellingham said after the match. "So, I think she drilled it into me all week about being careful of that yellow card."
Bellingham had received a yellow card in the round of 32 match against DR Congo, and another caution would have suspended him for the upcoming semi-final. While cumulative yellow cards are wiped clean for the final, players are still at risk of suspension for earlier knockout stages.
This is not the first time Bellingham has highlighted his mother's influence. The 23-year-old Real Madrid player has previously described her as his 'queen' and a 'great laugh.' During the 2022 World Cup in Qatar, he revealed that she still made his bed, and she also assisted him when he forgot his passport on a trip to Spain with his former club, Borussia Dortmund.
England's victory over Norway sets them up for a semi-final clash against Argentina in Atlanta. The match follows Argentina's 3-1 win against Switzerland in their quarter-final, also decided in extra time. The unofficial England team anthem, Oasis's 1995 song "Wonderwall," saw a significant increase in listening figures after the Norway win, reportedly a 51 percent rise on Spotify compared to the same hour the previous day. The song has become a post-match tradition for the squad since England's opening victory in the tournament.
