Josh Kerr broke the 27-year-old world mile record on Saturday at London Stadium, running a time of three minutes 42.68 seconds. The 28-year-old Briton's performance was cheered by a capacity crowd of 60,000 spectators.
Kerr's new record surpassed Hicham El Guerrouj's previous mark by 0.45 seconds. He had publicly stated his intention in March to break the Moroccan's long-standing record and tailored his training regimen, which reportedly included 222-second ice baths, to achieve this goal.
With this achievement, Kerr becomes the sixth British athlete to hold the world record for the mile. El Guerrouj set the previous record in 1999, the year Kerr was born. The 2023 world 1,500m champion also improved his personal best by nearly three seconds. He received a prize of £38,000 for his record-breaking run.
