Former National Rugby League (NRL) player Josh Dugan has returned to competitive rugby league after a five-year absence, playing for the Northern Pride in a Queensland Cup match. Dugan, 36, featured in the centers for the Pride's victory over the Ipswich Jets last weekend, recording 59 running meters from six carries and making 11 tackles in the 34-12 win.
This marks Dugan's first appearance on the field since concluding his NRL career. Since stepping away from professional football, he has established a new career as a fishing guide for Tropic Barra Adventures in far North Queensland, a role he has held for over two years. His social media presence reflects his enjoyment of this lifestyle, showcasing catches of various fish and his pursuits in hunting game.
Dugan's rugby league career, spanning from 2009 to 2021, saw him play 215 matches and score 79 tries for the Canberra Raiders, St. George Illawarra Dragons, and Cronulla Sharks. He also represented New South Wales 12 times and Australia in 12 matches. During his time in the NRL, Dugan was recognized for his on-field talent but his career was also marked by several off-field incidents. These included contract terminations, social media controversies, and breaches of COVID-19 protocols.
Following his departure from the Sharks in 2021, which involved a significant fine from the NRL for protocol breaches, Dugan transitioned to his current career away from the spotlight of professional sports. His recent return to play has surprised many fans, highlighting his continued connection to the game while pursuing a different professional path.
