Joe Salisbury Retires from Professional Tennis After Six Grand Slam Titles
The British doubles star concluded his career at the US Open, reaching the semi-finals in his final event.
Six-time Grand Slam champion Joe Salisbury has retired from professional tennis, concluding his career at this month's US Open. Salisbury, who was formerly the world number one in doubles, reached the semi-finals of the US Open with his long-time partner Rajeev Ram, who also retired from the sport.
Salisbury and Ram made history at the 2023 US Open by becoming the first pair to win three consecutive men's doubles titles at the event. Salisbury's career accolades include four Grand Slam doubles titles with Ram, two of which were at the US Open. He also secured two mixed doubles titles with American player Desirae Krawczyk.
Representing Britain, Salisbury is the most successful men's doubles player of the Open Era. His overall professional achievements include 17 tour-level titles, the season-ending ATP Finals in both 2022 and 2023, and the 2020 Australian Open title with Ram.
Salisbury, 34, stated that he had been contemplating his future for some time and expressed satisfaction with his decision. He shared on Instagram that tennis had been a significant part of his life and that he felt fortunate for the opportunities, experiences, and success he achieved. He described traveling the world and playing tennis as a dream come true, exceeding any expectations he had for his career. Salisbury concluded by saying he gave his all and could look back with pride and no regrets.
Earlier this year, Salisbury took a three-month break from the tour, during which he spoke about experiencing anxiety. He mentioned that while the anxiety did not significantly impact his tennis performance, it created a feeling of dread that diminished his enjoyment of life on the road.
