Apprentice jockey Brandon Wilkie has received a suspended sentence after being convicted of grievous bodily harm (GBH) for an assault on his weighing-room rival and flatmate, Kyle McHugh. The incident occurred in August 2025 after McHugh reportedly asked Wilkie, "when did you last ride a winner?"

Following the comment, Wilkie, then 21, punched McHugh in the face as they returned to their shared flat in Newmarket. According to court documents, McHugh fell, and Wilkie continued the assault with kicks and punches. After apologizing and helping McHugh up, Wilkie explained his actions by saying he was "teaching (McHugh) some manners." He also sent a video of the injured McHugh to friends with the caption "putting manners on him."

McHugh sustained serious facial injuries, including a broken nose, a fractured eye socket, a fractured jawbone, six chipped teeth, and a cut to his eyelid. He required eight weeks to recover before returning to racing.

Wilkie admitted to the GBH charge and was sentenced to 14 months imprisonment, suspended for 12 months. He was also ordered to pay McHugh a £500 fine.

The assault effectively ended Wilkie's racing career in Britain, as he has not ridden there since last August. While he has continued to pick up rides in Ireland since December, the Irish Horseracing Regulatory Board has placed an interim suspension on his racing license pending the outcome of legal proceedings.
