The New York Jets will be without leading receiver Garrett Wilson when they face the Kansas City Chiefs on Sunday, as he has been placed in concussion protocol. The absence of Wilson, who has been the team's top receiver with 43 receptions, 527 yards, and three touchdowns this season, presents a significant challenge for the Jets' offense.
Wide receivers Adonai Mitchell and Omar Cooper Jr. are expected to step up in Wilson's absence. Mitchell is coming off a career-best performance against the Las Vegas Raiders, recording seven catches for 142 yards and a touchdown. Cooper has impressed as a rookie, especially after returning from an ankle injury, and had previously topped 100 receiving yards in two consecutive games before being held without a catch last week.
"It's a great opportunity, but you always want a guy like that out there," Cooper said of Wilson's absence. "It doesn’t change much for my preparation and my game plan. I’m gonna do the same things as before and make sure I can attack whatever I can to help the team."
Offensive coordinator Frank Reich acknowledged that Wilson cannot be replaced directly but expressed confidence in the remaining receivers. "You can’t replace Garrett Wilson. He’s a unique player. But on the other hand, we’re not afraid," Reich stated. "We saw the game [Mitchell] had. We saw the game [Cooper] had. We have a lot of confidence in our guys. They’re different players, so maybe you do slightly different things. … You have to play to your players’ strengths."
Mitchell noted that his connection with quarterback Geno Smith has been developing through consistent preparation. "In my eyes, that’s when preparation meets opportunity," Mitchell said. "The preparation was put in during OTAs, during summer break and during fall camp. So it’s just a product of preparation."
