Azareye’h Thomas is looking to prove himself once again as he battles for a starting cornerback position with the New York Jets in 2026. The second-year player’s promising rookie season was cut short in Week 14 by a shoulder injury that required surgery, his first major injury and procedure.

Thomas, a third-round pick from Florida State, expressed his frustration over the timing of the injury, which occurred just as he was getting an opportunity to compete for a starting role following Sauce Gardner’s departure. "Who wouldn’t be frustrated?" Thomas said. "You work all your life to get to this moment and you go out with injury."

Despite the setback, Thomas feels his shoulder is now stronger than ever and is not hindering his aggressive playing style. "I’m a physical player. I’m not afraid to go down there and hit," Thomas stated. "I know I had the surgery and everything, but that ain’t stopping me."

He enters training camp facing a competition with veteran Nahshon Wright for the starting spot opposite Brandon Stephens. While rookie D’Angelo Ponds may also contend for playing time, he is considered a more natural fit for the slot position. Wright, who recorded five interceptions for the Bears last season, presents a significant challenge.

In his rookie campaign, Thomas showed flashes of potential, tying Darrelle Revis for the second-longest streak by a Jets rookie since 2000 with at least one pass deflection in six consecutive games. He finished 2025 with 22 tackles and seven pass deflections, demonstrating solid physicality. However, his performance metrics indicated room for improvement, with a 55.1 Pro Football Focus grade ranking 87th among qualified cornerbacks and a 55.5 coverage grade placing him 86th.

Thomas is now focused on trusting his instincts and preparation more in his second year. "Really just trusting my eyes, trusting my study," Thomas explained. "I feel like last year I hesitated a lot on a lot of things. I feel like there were a lot of plays I left out there."

His mindset for the upcoming season is to approach each day and practice with his teammates. "My mindset is taking it one step, one day at a time with my teammates," Thomas said. "Continue to be a great teammate, showing up every day, that’s my mindset."
