Joint practice sessions between the New York Jets and the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were marked by multiple brawls Tuesday, disrupting the training camp activities. Despite a long-standing friendship between the head coaches, Todd Bowles of the Buccaneers and Robert Saleh of the Jets, the teams could not avoid repeated confrontations.
The skirmishes began early in the practice. Jets rookie defensive lineman David Bailey and Buccaneers tackle Luke Goedeke were involved in an initial altercation during one-on-one drills. Goedeke described the interaction, stating that Bailey, after losing a rep, attempted to shove him, leading to a response. Goedeke asserted his intention to defend his players and himself, adding, "I’m not going to get punked and not do anything about it, especially on a football field."
Later, Goedeke was involved in another incident with Jets linebacker Kingsley Enagbare. This fight escalated, resulting in both sidelines clearing. During this confrontation, Tampa Bay’s tackle reportedly ripped off the helmet of Jets defensive back Qwan’tez Stiggers and threw it down the field after an interception.
An ambulance was called to the sideline for Stiggers, though Jets coach Robert Saleh later stated he appeared to be in good condition. The fighting, however, continued even after a 10-minute cooling-off period.
Further altercations included Buccaneers defensive tackle A’Shawn Robinson removing the helmet of Jets right tackle Armand Membou. Another brawl involved Jets rookie defensive tackle Darrell Jackson Jr. and several Buccaneers players.
Jets defensive tackle Harrison Phillips expressed his displeasure with the fighting, noting that such actions can lead to ejections in games and significantly harm a team. He acknowledged the adrenaline boost but hoped for cleaner practice sessions going forward, stating, "I don’t like fighting, but there’s some positives in the idea that I don’t want to be punked out here."
Coach Saleh indicated that veteran players are less likely to engage in such behavior and that younger players need to learn from these incidents. "Those [young] guys just have to learn. Hopefully we’ll come out [Wednesday] and not have that, just have a good practice and finish this thing off," Saleh said.
Jets running back Breece Hall offered a different perspective, humorously stating his rule is to avoid players over 240 pounds and to use fights as a "water break" due to the heat.
The two teams are scheduled for another joint practice on Wednesday before their preseason opener on Friday at MetLife Stadium.
