Tenerife has announced that the neurological condition of their striker, Jesús de Miguel, has worsened following a severe on-field incident. The Spanish second division club provided an update early Tuesday morning regarding the 30-year-old's health.
De Miguel was placed in intensive care after a collision with Andorra goalkeeper Jesús Owono during a match on Monday. The game was abandoned in stoppage time with the score tied 2-2. According to the club, De Miguel is stable but the severity of his condition is significant. They have stated that the hospital's medical services will provide further updates.
Reports from Spanish media outlet Marca suggest De Miguel may have suffered a cardiac arrest while being transported to the hospital and required resuscitation in the ambulance. He is reportedly breathing on his own but remains unconscious.
The incident occurred in the seventh minute of stoppage time as De Miguel appeared poised to break away on a counter-attack. Owono, in an attempt to clear the ball near the halfway line, collided with the striker. De Miguel initially fell to the ground and then became motionless, prompting medical staff to rush onto the field. After receiving treatment for over five minutes, he was taken off the pitch to a standing ovation.
Owono was initially shown a red card for the challenge, and the referee subsequently decided to abandon the fixture. Andorra Football Club issued a statement sending their strength and best wishes to De Miguel, his family, and Tenerife.
De Miguel's teammates have reportedly visited him at the hospital. Journalist Iván Álvarez reported that Owono is deeply affected by the situation and intends to apologize privately to De Miguel before making any public statements.
