British long jump athlete Jazmin Sawyers has gone viral after wearing a pink blanket and sunglasses on the track moments before winning a silver medal at the European Championships. Sawyers, nicknamed for her exceptional leaping ability, swaddled herself in the heat-retaining blanket and donned sunglasses, only to remove them before her record-setting jump.
Her best jump measured 6.99 meters, placing her just one centimeter behind gold medalist Larissa Iapichino. This achievement marks Sawyers' third European Championship medal and is particularly significant given her recent recovery from a long-term Achilles rupture that sidelined her from the 2024 Paris Olympics.
"I'm so thrilled," Sawyers told talkSPORT. "I actually went into the Championships ranked 11th, which says you'll maybe scrape into the final. I thought I was capable of being right up there. I couldn't quite find another centimetre but I've got years to keep improving. That's the best series of my life. In front of a home crowd, it's beautiful."
The unconventional pre-competition attire sparked a significant social media buzz. Users on X, formerly Twitter, commented on her unique style, with one quipping, "Jaz Sawyers might have won gold had she wore a more aerodynamic outfit for long jump." Another user noted, "When you’re competing at 8pm but your bedtime is 9pm," while others praised her aesthetic, stating, "This is an aesthetic and i’m 100% here for it."
This medal adds to a strong summer for the 32-year-old athlete, who also secured a gold medal at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow earlier in August. Her success comes after overcoming significant career setbacks, including the Achilles injury that required surgery and led to her commentating for the BBC during the Olympics.
Sawyers has spoken about the mental fortitude required in professional sports, particularly after setbacks. "The hardest time to believe [in yourself] is in the moments after you have failed again," she remarked earlier this month. "The failure comes thick and fast in sport. Every single time it happens, you have to pick yourself up and go 'despite this new evidence I have that says I can't do it, I still choose to believe that I can.'"
She attributes her recent performance to a more consistent and uninterrupted training schedule. "That's what I've been waiting for. That's what I expect from myself," Sawyers told Athletics Weekly. "I put it down to being able to train leading up to the Championships. Now I have evidence that I should be jumping that far based off training numbers and past competitions. At this stage in my career, I understand how to jump well. That sounds silly, but you're always tweaking things and figuring things out."
