Cleveland Browns defensive end Jared Verse voiced his disappointment with his teammates' response to a potentially injurious play by a Pittsburgh Steelers opponent. During a recent 27-6 loss to the Steelers, Verse was flipped upside down and slammed to the ground by Steelers lineman Mason McCormick while attempting to block a field goal.
Verse described the incident as an act of "dirty s***" that could have ended his season or significantly altered his life. He stated his anger stemmed not just from the play itself, but from the apparent lack of reaction from those around him. "The lack of reaction by those around me had upset me a lot," Verse said.
He drew a parallel to a similar play involving teammate Derek Barnett on the subsequent field goal attempt, which also angered him. "Those are my brothers, those are my teammates. And, you know, when you do something like that to them, it upsets me very deeply," Verse explained.
Verse believes the incident highlighted a need for greater mental awareness and camaraderie within the team. "I was like, we have to be better. Like, we have to get better on every aspect of the game of being mentally aware of these are my teammates, these are my brothers, and we're not fighting for each other," he added.
The pass rusher confirmed that he has discussed his concerns with his teammates. Despite the severity of the play, Verse remained in the game and is expected to play when the 5-3 Browns face the New Orleans Saints this Sunday.
