Jamie Carragher, a pundit for CBS Sports, made light of reports that he faces bankruptcy due to a tax bill reportedly between £700,000 and £800,000. The jokes occurred during the network's Champions League coverage on Tuesday, less than a week after HM Revenue and Customs (HMRC) filed a petition at the High Court in London.

During the broadcast, CBS Sports host Kate Abdo remarked on Carragher's financial situation, stating, "A busy hot summer can be taxing. Not for this man, Liverpool legend Jamie Carragher. A man whose career stats are more depleted than Jamie's bank account." Carragher and his co-pundits responded with laughter.

Carragher himself joined in the self-deprecating humor later in the show. While previewing a match, he quipped, "They (Barcelona) have probably had financial problems, haven't they. Well, haven't we all."

HMRC stated that it takes a supportive approach to customers with tax debts and offers various solutions like installment plans before resorting to bankruptcy petitions as a last resort. The agency does not comment on individual cases.

A spokesperson for Carragher indicated that the matter is a "private tax matter that should have been resolved sooner" and that steps are being taken to settle it promptly. The spokesperson expressed confidence that the issue would be resolved imminently and would not proceed further.

Carragher, 48, is involved in several business ventures, including directorships at four firms and an LLP membership. In addition to his role with CBS Sports, he is a regular pundit for Sky Sports and a contributor to 'The Overlap' podcast. He also founded the 23 Foundation, an organization supporting young people in Merseyside, and co-founded Football For Change, which addresses child poverty.
