As the November 10 NFL trade deadline approaches, the Jacksonville Jaguars' decision regarding wide receiver Brian Thomas Jr. is drawing significant attention from league observers and rival teams.
The Jaguars, who currently hold a 6-2 record, may consider trading Thomas to address defensive needs, particularly in the wake of defensive tackle DaVon Hamilton's season-ending quad injury. ESPN reported that Jacksonville has received multiple inquiries about Thomas in past seasons but has historically maintained a stance of keeping him. However, their defensive needs and Thomas' reduced role could alter that position.
Thomas, a 2024 first-round pick, played only 19 snaps in the Jaguars' recent 33-10 victory over the Baltimore Ravens, failing to record a reception. Through eight games this season, the 24-year-old has accumulated 117 receiving yards and two touchdowns.
Multiple teams are reportedly seeking wide receiver reinforcements, including the Kansas City Chiefs, Pittsburgh Steelers, and San Francisco 49ers. The Chiefs, despite their 5-2 record, lack significant receiving depth beyond tight end Travis Kelce, with Rashee Rice leading their receivers with 243 yards. ESPN noted Kansas City's particular interest in acquiring Thomas.
Earlier in October, multiple league executives indicated that Jacksonville would seriously consider trading Thomas due to his diminished role in the offense. Further fueling speculation, Thomas was notably absent from a Jaguars social media promotion for a recent game, suggesting his tenure with the team might be nearing an end.
Jacksonville's aggressiveness at last year's trade deadline, when they acquired wide receiver Jakobi Meyers from the Raiders, could signal a similar approach this year. With Meyers now on the roster and the emergence of Parker Washington, Thomas's playing time and importance in the offensive scheme have decreased.
Thomas experienced a strong rookie season with 1,282 receiving yards, but his production dropped to 707 yards last year. Despite his reduced impact this season, the Jaguars maintain a comfortable lead in the AFC South, with the second-place Houston Texans at 2-5.
The Jaguars' next game is scheduled for November 15 against the Tennessee Titans, and Thomas's availability for that matchup remains uncertain.
