The Italian Football Federation (FIGC) has identified Pep Guardiola as a primary candidate to become the next head coach of the Italian national team, commonly known as the Azzurri. FIGC President Giovanni Malago confirmed that discussions have taken place with the decorated manager, signaling the federation's ambition to secure his services.
Malago acknowledged the considerable financial hurdles involved in potentially hiring Guardiola, stating that the federation may need to make a significant "exception" to its budget. "There are also financial and budgetary considerations," Malago said in a podcast. "In the short to medium term, to say that we'll have to tighten our belts is an understatement. However, some exceptions have been made, which may relate to the name that is so dominant at the moment." When pressed if he was referring to Guardiola, Malago replied, "Yes."
Despite the public confirmation of talks, Malago cautioned that an appointment is not guaranteed. "It's not a given that this [talks with Guardiola] will come to fruition, but I believe it was right and important to open a dialogue and keep it alive," he stated. The FIGC is reportedly exploring multiple candidates to ensure continuity in their search for a successor to the previous coach, Roberto Mancini.
Senior figures within the federation, including Paolo Maldini and Leonardo, are reported to have met with Guardiola in Barcelona to discuss the vacant position. This meeting underscores the determination to attract one of football's most successful managers.
However, reports suggest that Guardiola may be inclined to take a break from coaching following a demanding season. He has previously expressed a desire to spend time with his family after concluding his tenure with Manchester City. Some reports indicate that initial conversations were brief, and it would take a significant effort to alter his plans for a sabbatical. The federation plans to continue evaluating other options on their shortlist while awaiting a definitive decision from Guardiola.
