FIFA President Gianni Infantino has abandoned plans to sell stakes in the World Cup, citing "divisions" within the football community. The decision comes after opposition from UEFA, CONCACAF, the AFC, and two members of the FIFA hierarchy.

In a statement, Infantino explained that the FIFA Forward Enterprise project was initially intended to strengthen FIFA Member Associations and the sport globally, particularly in areas needing support. He emphasized that the project was always contingent on majority support from FIFA Member Associations and subject to consultation processes.

"Having listened carefully to all the views, it has become clear that the project has created divisions of a nature that, regardless of the level of support, are no longer in the interest of the objective set out in the first place," Infantino stated. He reiterated that FIFA's purpose "has always been - and will always be - to unite and improve."

As a result of the opposition, the proposal "will not proceed." Infantino expressed his intention to convene stakeholders in the coming days and weeks to foster shared interest in the game and continue its growth worldwide, with a focus on countries that require the most support.

The FIFA Forward Enterprise project was designed to provide a basis for strengthening the organization's member associations and the sport globally. The proposal faced significant pushback, leading Infantino to reconsider and ultimately withdraw the initiative.

Infantino stated that moving forward, his focus will be on uniting all interested parties and continuing the growth of football, especially in nations that are in greater need of support.
