The NTT IndyCar Series has unveiled the IR-28 chassis, set to debut in 2028. This new generation of race car marks a significant technological advancement, incorporating hybrid powertrains and twin-turbo V6 engines from the outset. It will replace the current Dallara DW12 chassis, which has been in use since 2012.
The IR-28 was designed with key IndyCar safety and performance features like the Aeroscreen and hybrid powertrains integrated from its inception. The chassis is expected to be approximately 100 pounds lighter than its predecessor. New front and rear wings are being developed for superspeedways and road/street courses, with the aim of promoting closer racing.
Engine manufacturers Honda and Chevrolet will continue their involvement, powering the new cars with 2.4-liter twin-turbocharged V6 engines expected to produce up to 760 horsepower. The hybrid system will utilize a battery-based Energy Storage System (ESS) with substantially increased storage capacity compared to current technology.
Reigning four-time series champion Alex Palou expressed enthusiasm for the new design, stating, "Seeing the car for the first time made me even more excited about where IndyCar is going. The design is super cool and feels like a proper next step for the series while still looking like an IndyCar Series car."
The current DW12 chassis has been a staple of the series for 15 years, a duration that stands in contrast to recent refreshes in other motorsports. For comparison, NASCAR has updated its cars twice in the same period, Formula 1 has seen three refreshes, and Formula E, which began in 2014, is preparing to introduce its fourth car generation.
Despite the focus on the future, the current IndyCar season continues with several races remaining. The series is scheduled to race at Portland International Raceway on August 9, followed by the Streets of Markham, Ontario on August 16. The Freedom 250 Grand Prix of Washington, D.C. is set for August 23, with a doubleheader at the Milwaukee Mile on August 29 and 30. The season will conclude on September 6 at WeatherTech Raceway Laguna Seca. All remaining races will be broadcast on Fox.
