HYROX co-founder Moritz Fürste has announced immediate rule changes following an incident where an athlete, Joanna Wietrzyk, completed a race in Beijing while visibly soiled. Fürste issued a personal apology for the organization's failure to react promptly to the situation, admitting, "HYROX made a mistake by not reacting immediately during the race."
Fürste stated that he takes responsibility for not anticipating such events and confirmed that new rules and procedures are now in place to prevent similar occurrences. "We learn and try to get better every day," he said.
The controversy erupted after Wietrzyk, the HYROX women's record-holder from Melbourne, continued competing despite what appeared to be a bowel incontinence incident. Videos and images circulated online showing fecal matter on her legs as she completed various exercises, including burpees, lunges, and wall balls. This sparked biohazard concerns and led to criticism from viewers who questioned why officials allowed her to continue, especially since spitting, snotting, and littering are explicitly banned.
The incident prompted a significant backlash, with many online commenters calling for Wietrzyk's disqualification and demanding an apology from HYROX. Some pointed out the risk to unpaid volunteers tasked with cleaning the course. Others argued that losing control of one's bowels should automatically lead to withdrawal from a race.
Following the event, HYROX initiated a "major clean-up operation," sanitizing equipment and replacing affected sections of carpet. Affected areas were isolated and disinfected.
Wietrzyk, who ultimately won the race, later posted from a hospital, stating, "Go hard or go home they say ... a win is a win." She thanked supporters and indicated she would return to competition soon.
The HYROX competition format involves athletes alternating between a 1-kilometer run and a functional workout station, repeated eight times. The stations include the SkiErg, Sled Push, Sled Pull, Burpee Broad Jumps, rowing, Farmer's Carry, Sandbag Lunges, and Wall Balls.
