England batsman Harry Brook has found a potential blueprint for his future batting approach, according to cricket commentator Jonathan Agnew. Agnew stated that while Brook possesses talent comparable to former England stars like Mark Butcher and Kevin Pietersen, he was not yet mature enough for the Test captaincy.

Brook was reportedly considered for the captaincy by managing director Rob Key and the England and Wales Cricket Board. However, Agnew believes that incidents such as one in Wellington and past media comments indicate a lack of the necessary maturity for the role, which extends beyond on-field tactics to representing the country and addressing difficult global topics. Joe Root was consequently the sole viable candidate.

Agnew anticipates Root's tenure as captain will be short, possibly concluding after the next Ashes series. He suggested that Brook has the opportunity to prove himself as the next candidate by demonstrating maturity, particularly through his batting. The possibility remains that other players, such as Jacob Bethell, who is highly regarded for leadership, could emerge as contenders.

Concerns exist that Brook's recent performance might be viewed in the context of perceived sensible batting failures during the Ashes. Agnew acknowledges this frustration but emphasizes the need to look forward and put the Ashes behind them, noting lessons learned and more astute leadership from Root and Stephen Fleming. With significant series ahead, including a winter trip to South Africa and the next Ashes, a move forward is deemed necessary.

Agnew also highlighted the encouraging performances of Jordan Cox, who batted with restraint and class for his 73, and Joe Root, whose measured batting helped stabilize the innings. While these calm performances are welcome after recent months, Agnew stressed that England should not abandon the positivity of the 'Bazball' era entirely, but rather temper it with improved decision-making and flexibility.

Pakistan's team selection, which Agnew believes lacked sufficient pace, presents an ideal opportunity for England to press their advantage and secure a series lead. Brook's recent performance, in Agnew's view, has shown the way forward for the team.
