NJ/NY Gotham FC took a significant step towards winning the NWSL Shield with a 2-1 victory over the Orlando Pride on Sunday. Despite missing key players and facing challenges including a stomach bug affecting head coach Juan Carlos Amorós, the team secured the win. Midge Purce opened the scoring for Gotham in the 22nd minute with a header, assisted by Guro Reiten. The lead was extended in the 62nd minute when Tierna Davidson scored from a rebound off the crossbar following another shot by Reiten. Orlando pulled a goal back three minutes later through Solai Washington, but Gotham held on for the victory.
"I think what’s contributed to this is just kind of the togetherness — everyone’s kind of backs against the wall,” Gotham assistant coach Shaun Harris told reporters. “I think what’s contributed to this is just kind of the togetherness — everyone’s kind of backs against the wall.”
While a Gotham win combined with specific results could have secured the Shield on Sunday, those outcomes did not fully materialize. The Kansas City Current defeated the Washington Spirit, but the Boston Legacy and the San Diego Wave played to a draw. This means Gotham's pursuit of their first NWSL Shield will be decided on the final day of the regular season, Decision Day.
Gotham can claim the regular-season title by defeating Utah in their final match on Decision Day. A victory would mark the franchise's first NWSL Shield and their second trophy of 2026, having already won the NWSL Challenge Cup in June.
Gotham will conclude their regular season on November 1 before entering the playoffs, where they are projected to host the No. 8 seed if current standings hold.
