Gotham FC secured the club’s first NWSL Shield with a 2-0 victory over the playoff-bound Utah Royals, marking a significant achievement in their consistent performance throughout the 30-game regular season. Despite the historic win, the team expressed that their ultimate goal remains winning another championship.

Defender Tierna Davidson accepted the NWSL Shield from commissioner Jessica Berman on Sunday evening, sharing the moment with teammates Mandy Freeman and Midge Purce. The win capped off a season where Gotham finished with an 18-5-7 record and 61 points, setting a new club record for points in a single season.

“It’s a good feeling,” said Purce, who played a key role in the victory with an assist on Guro Reiten’s opening goal and a contribution to Jaedyn Shaw’s insurance goal. “I mean, I like the Shield. I’m American though. I want the championship.”

This sentiment reflects the club’s motto, “always building, never finished.” Gotham has established a reputation for strong playoff performances, having won two of the past three NWSL championships as lower seeds. The club’s leadership had set higher expectations for this season, emphasizing consistency and peak performance during the playoffs.

“We want consistency,” Gotham FC president of soccer operations Yael Averbuch stated in a letter to fans earlier in the season. “We want to be playing our best soccer in the playoffs, and we want our regular-season performance to reflect the championship standards we hold.”

Gotham entered Decision Day with a three-point lead over the second-place San Diego Wave. They needed at least a draw against Utah to clinch the Shield, but the team pushed for a win.

Reiten scored in the ninth minute, assisted by Purce, to give Gotham an early 1-0 lead. In the second half, Purce connected with Shaw for the second goal, securing the victory and the Shield.

Despite the celebration, the team faced challenges. Jaelin Howell left the match in the 24th minute with an apparent right ankle injury, and concerns were raised about the field conditions at Sports Illustrated Stadium. However, the return of key players Jaedyn Shaw and Rose Lavelle from injuries provided a boost, with both receiving loud ovations from the home crowd.

“It feels good,” Purce added about winning the Shield. “I’ve never won the Shield. So this was something that I really wanted to add to my resume. And I think the entire team was very, very bought in. And it’s a happy day, and we’ll celebrate it today.”

While the Shield signifies their regular-season dominance, Gotham FC remains focused on their ultimate objective: adding another championship title to their growing legacy.
